ISG planning notes: Getting started, 31 May

This is proposed as a collaborative learning process which will combine the usual class room meetings with an internet support system, the goal of which is to explore our three-part topic of (1) Sustainable Development, (2) Business & (3) Society with a class of last-term graduate MBA students of the Institut Supérieur de Gestion

What you have here is our attempt to create a “virtual classroom, library and communications lab” in support of the intensive three-day seminar which is to meet physically at the İnstitut in Paris from 9 – 11 June 2011. We call what you see in this site our “Dashboard“. It is complemented by a Course Portfolio of articles and references, a Contact Group for communications and coordination, and a formidable section on Key Links & Sources, which is your main window on the outside world beyond the classroom walls.

Because of the complexity and importance of our topic, and the tight time limit of the physical seminar, we decided to provide a one week preparatory or “run-up course” for the registered students. Using this and two other internet tools , the goal is to permit the students to prepare to take fullest advantage of the very full days three days from 9 to 11 June. They will thus arrive in the classroom on Day 1 with a running start.

Further details on the seminar organization are available here under this About section, while for more on the tools intended to support our dialogues, go to the Tools entry on the above menu.

I would draw your attention to the fact that participation in this preparatory stage accounts for 10% of the total course credit. All registered students are expected to participate actively. Details on the organization of and follow-up to this first stage will be found here.

If you have any questions or suggestions for us, do not hesitate to contact me at or via Skype at newmobility. You will also find details about office hours in this same section.

PS. Finally, let me make this point: that even without the physical presence of a professor and a classroom, anybody who really wishes to educate themselves on the topic of this seminar will find much of what they need here. At least enough to get a grand start on this important topic. If you take this toolkit and apply yourself with diligence, first to what you find here as a starting point, but then beyond it by virtue of following the leads that are given and beyond that the clues that your good nose picks up – if you do this with genuine intellectual curiosity, well, you will develop a pretty formidable competence on our topic.  That’s important.
