STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS (Life before “Circular Economy”)

CE Antecedents heros v5

More often than not the concept or application of what is called”Circular Economy” is treated as an entirely new toolbox or approach, that is to say somehow historyless,. Like Athena, at birth springing full formed from the head of Zeus. This is of course far from the case.

The goal of the above quickly fashioned mosaic is to serve as an explicit reminder — an incomplete reminder to be sure— of some of the great men and great thinking that came before, with this listing taking us up to the beginning of this still-new century,. (Surely I have missed here some of the important figures, who to my mind constitute the Founding Fathers of Circular Economy. So please do not be shy and share your thoughts on this with us.)

And just in case it did not strike you: they are, to a man, exactly that: i.e., all males!  For now I don’t quite know what to make of this, but it is at the very  least worth noting.  And worth stressing that any such concept that does not include full participation and leadership from women as well is doomed to fail. So let’s think about that for a bit as we continue to move ahead.

    Hi Eric
😉Surely you know that at least one of the Ffounding Ffathers is a Ffemale. I think she circled the globe in a small boat a few years ago.

  2. Yes Robert but. . . .

My heroes’ list has an indicated cut-off of the turn of the century. For this I I was/am searching for the deep historical roots.

The excellent Ellen Mac Arthur entered the fray at the ripe old age of 34 upon her retirement in 2010. And indeed she is making a real difference. We are so lucky to have her. More more!

    PS. “Ffounding Ffathers” is deliciious
