Donald AppleyardDonald Appleyard was an urban designer and theorist. He was born in England in 1928. He first studied architecture and then urban planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After his education, ee taught at MIT for six years.

During his career, he had a strong interest in environmental perception and community based planning. He was a humanist urban planner. He was pleased to work on people’s environmental issues. He also focused on the livability of cities and neighborhoods. Therefore, he began to work on neighborhood design in Berkeley, and Athens, and also on city wide planning in San Francisco and Ciudad Guayana.

Max Sprenger on Thomas Piketty

Thomas PikettyThomas Piketty was born in 1971 and grew up in Clichy, in the suburbs of Paris. He is a French economist and professor at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) and Paris School of Economics. He specialized in economic inequalities.

Piketty entered the École Normal Supérieur at 18 years old. At only 22 he obtained his PhD from EHESS. This thesis about wealth redistribution won him the French Economics Association’s award for the best thesis in 1993.

In 2015 he refuses his Knight of the Legion of Honor nomination because he refuses because « It shouldn’t be the role of a government to say who is honorable »

Jason Balaguera on Maurice Strong

Maruice StrongHe was a businessman Canadian that born April of 1929 in Oak Lake Manitoba, specialising in oil and mineral resources. He started as enterpriser in the petroleum área and he worked in different companies of the sector as Power Corporation of Canada, also he was secretary general of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment and become chief executive officer of Petro-Canada. He is recognized as a leader of the international environmental movements.

For other hand he was president of the Council of the University for Peace from 1998 to 2006.  Today he is professor of the Peking University and honorary chairman of its Environmental Foundation.

María Angelica Mejia on Rachel Carson

Photo Rachel CarsonRachel Carson was a great writer, activist, scientist, and ecologist. She grew up in Pennsylvania, and in 1929 she graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women as a marine biologist. She wrote numerous articles and books about conservation and natural resources and edited scientific articles, her final purpose was to teach people about the beauty of the world, and show that human beings were one part of nature distinguished primarily by their power to alter it, in some cases irreversibly.

In 1952 and 1955, she published two books that made her famous as a naturalist and science and they have known as a biography of the ocean, these books are: The Sea around Us (best seller) and The Edge of the Sea.

Marley Serrano Estupiñán on Albert O. Hirschman

Albert HirschmanAlbert O. Hirschman was born on April 7 of 1915 in Berlin, and death on December 10 of 2012. He was an economist and the author of several books on political economy and political ideology.  His principal contribution was about the “development economies”.

He lived in Colombia from 1952 to 1956, and like result in his investigation in this country, He said in his book: “The strategy of economic development”.
